1st Year Passing Marks 2026 – 40% Passing Criteria Explained

One of the most searched questions every result season is simple: how many marks do you need to pass? For 2026, the answer has changed. The passing threshold for 1st year has moved from 33% to 40% under the new IBCC-aligned grading framework, and the old “Fail” label is gone from result cards. This guide explains the 40% rule, the new 10-point grading scale, and what happens if you fall below the line. For the full grade-point breakdown, see our HSSC grading system 2026 guide.

What Are the Passing Marks for 1st Year in 2026?

You need 40% marks in each subject to pass 1st year (HSSC Part-I) in 2026. This is a per-subject rule, not an aggregate one. Scoring 80% overall does not help if one subject sits below 40%. The threshold was raised from the old 33% standard when the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) approved the new national grading policy, and Punjab’s Board Committee of Chairmen adopted it for class 9 and 11 from the 2026 session onward.

One caution: boards implement the framework through their own notifications, so treat your official DMC and your board’s result notification as the final word for your session.

The New 10-Point Grading Scale

Marks are now reported on a 10-point scale instead of the old division-based bands. The published framework runs from A++ down to U:

  • A++ (96–100%): Extraordinary
  • A+ (91–95%): Exceptional
  • A (86–90%): Outstanding
  • B++ (81–85%): Excellent
  • B+ (76–80%): Very Good
  • B (71–75%): Good
  • C+ (61–70%): Fair
  • C (51–60%): Above Average
  • D (40–50%): Pass
  • U (below 40%): Unsatisfactory

The rollout is phased: class 9 and 11 moved to the new scale in 2026, while class 10 and 12 follow in 2027. You can use our percentage calculator to convert your marks and check your grade on the new scale.

What Happens Below 40%?

A subject below 40% is marked U (Unsatisfactory) instead of “Fail”. The practical consequence is the same as before: you have not cleared that subject. If it is one or two subjects, you can clear them through the 2nd Annual exams. Our 1st year supplementary exams guide explains who can appear and how the checking works.

Does the 40% Rule Apply to Every Board?

The IBCC framework is national, and boards adopt it through their own notifications. KPK boards applied the 40% threshold to their 2026 HSSC results, and FBISE reports 40% per subject for its 2026 HSSC Part-I result as well. Punjab’s boards approved the framework for class 11 from the 2026 session. Because notification timing can vary, always confirm against your own board’s official result. For example, students under BISE Lahore should check the Lahore board’s result notification, and Gujranwala board students should check theirs.
